AN Okehampton resident was joined by the mayor when she celebrated her 103rd birthday with family and friends last week.

Gwen Knight, who was originally a resident of Holsworthy for 50 years, has lived in Okehampton for the last 30 years.

Now a resident at Wardhayes Residential Home, Gwen spent her special day with her son Colin Knight, 74, daughter Carolyn Tucker, 63, grandchildren Joanne and Jamie Tucker and great grand-daughter Roxy Tucker.

Gwen, who has stayed active throughout her life, gave up driving a car when she was 70, opting to ride a moped until she was 75, because she felt it would be more economical to run.

In 1998, Gwen's grand-daughter Joanne nominated her for Active Grandparent of the year and at the age of 89, Gwen made her first flight to Jersey to see her grandchildren.

Gwen's daughter Carolyn, said: 'Mum was really well on the day.

'Wardhayes put on a lovely spread for her in the conservatory.

'She's still so active and walks around a lot with a frame.

'She doesn't watch TV because her hearing is not so good but her eyesight is amazing and has been ever since she had her cataract done when she was 92.

'She has always been very active and up until Christmas, just before she went into care, I would take her every Wednesday to the Holsworthy market to have a cup of coffee and a catch up with friends.

'I'd like to thank Wardhayes for looking after her so well. She loves to go out on the bus trips to Roadford Down on the occasional Sunday.

'Mum's always been an animal lover and likes nothing more than to sit and look into the fields to see what's around her.'
