THE team behind Sticklepath Fireshow, which was cancelled in 2013, is appealing for help from the community to get the show up and running again for 2014.
Last year's show, which would have been the 30th anniversary of the event, was cancelled following a number of difficulties throughout the year — but the team who have been behind previous shows are holding a meeting next week to try and bring the show back.
Taking place at 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 2 at the King's Arms in South Zeal, there will be information on how to take part, including vital committee positions which need to be filled, as well as the many different volunteer roles available.
Fi Reddaway, a former committee member and volunteer for the fireshow, said: 'I could write a book about the how important the fireshow has been to me, there are so many special memories. Having helped over a number of years, the absolutely number one fantastic thing about it has been being part of something that has brought lots of people together to make something spectacular happen that then made people smile.
'Not forgetting having a huge amount of fun getting there. Yes, the fireshow has made a difference, it has brought a community together and helped children and adults learn creative skills.
'Then, for one day in the year, up to 3,000 adults and children alike wait with anticipation to see what the set is going to look like this year, groan at the puns of the narrators, delight in the children's fantastic stage performances and costumes, crane their necks skyward to see an always stunning fireworks display and then wait in awe to see how quickly it will all burn down. What's not to love about that? It's part of our community and let's not lose it.'
Held at the National Trust's Finch Foundry field, the event has attracted up to 3,000 visitors in the past —although 2012 saw a dip in visitor numbers.
As well as a firework display, there is a dramatic production, taking Guy Fawkes on an adventure before he ends up on the bonfire.
Sticklepath Fireshow is primarily a charity which also runs summer and autumn creative workshops for children, providing them with fun activities and learning opportunities during their school holidays.
There are a number of ways you can offer your support, from poster distribution and health and safety, to transporting wood donations to the Finch Foundry site, helping to build and paint the set, or helping with the children's workshops in October.
