FRIENDS of South Tawton Primary School are invited to a history ‘lesson’ with a difference tomorrow (July 15).

The school, which holds 194 children and dates back to 1880, will be holding an event in aid of ‘History Week’ which has been organised by Lucy Dennis, the school’s history co-ordinator and Year 1 teacher.

All this week until tomorrow, the children will be learning all about the local history surrounding South Tawton and how the village has changed throughout the course of time.

The pupils start looking at Queen Victoria’s reign from 1838 to 1901. After that they will be looking at World War One (1914 to 1918) and World War Two, (1939-1945) before ending the week by looking at a brief summary of Britain in the 1950s to the present day.

The children will be learning about these events throughout a variety of activities including cooking, acting, guest speakers and finally a fancy dress and costume day.

The open afternoon will take place between 4pm and 5.30pm in the newly built main hall, with the afternoon being structured around the children and what they have learnt throughout the week. Guests will have the opportunity to view the showcased work as well as take part in a variety of activities before finishing the afternoon by watching a dance routine performed by a selection of students.

Last year the school received a £1.3-million investment from Devon County Council’s Capital Strategy fund. This money has gone toward the building project which has seen the school receive three new classrooms, each with cloakrooms, toilets and additional learning spaces, as well as a new hall. Visitors will have the chance to view these new additions to the school after seeing the children’s work.
