A UNIQUE Okehampton business providing low cost mobility equipment has found another way to help people get about — with a donation to Okehampton and District Community Transport Group. Terry Abbots of Terry's Zimmers has donated £250 to the group to support their work in the community. Terry set up his business after successfully fighting off cancer, and being in need of several different kinds of mobility equipment. He said: 'The thing was, it was no easy matter to find low cost options for a short while without the assessments and inevitable waiting lists. 'Then shortly after my recovery a good friend of mine came down with the same illness, only for him, sadly it was too late for a cure and he died in his late 60s. 'He too needed quite a lot of specialist equipment, some of which only arrived two days before he died. When the time came for me to help send the equipment back for recycling, I was horrified to discover that instead of going back into use for the next person, it was simply thrown away into a skip, and most of it was nearly new and in perfect working order. 'That really set me thinking and the idea to open this new shop to help recycle it cheaply to people who really need it quickly or as an addition, gradually took shape.' A percentage of the profits from the business will be used to support local charities. The community transport group is the first to receive such a donation. Sue Wonnacott, transport group co-ordinator, said: 'It is very kind of Terry to support us like this, and all donations are important to help keep our work going.'
