OKEHAMPTON's new mayor says he will offer his continuous support to his chosen charity for 2010.

Mayor Cllr David Weekes, who received the chain of office at the civic ceremony held last week, said he looks forward to working with Age Concern Okehampton and Torridge (ACOT), which are based on Crediton Road.

Cllr Weekes said: 'ACOT offer a broad support for older people in the current climate where most funding is aimed at services for the frailest and most disadvantaged people. Their services help people over 50, helping them to enhance the future of their lives by linking them with help and support.

'The charity are always looking for new ways of supporting older people when no support is available from the government, local authorities or existing projects in the voluntary sector.'

Cllr Weekes said he would like to encourage people to visit the charity and learn new skills.

'ACOT also offers a Silver Surfers' Day, a service for older people to come in and learn about basic computer skills. A lot of people find computers daunting and some of the handbooks available are so confusing.

'Having the opportunity to walk in and sit quietly at a computer and work through the basic skills can help to build people's confidence. The charity gives people that opportunity, which is great for the community.'

ACOT helps older people maintain their dignity and independence by supporting social, economic, cultural and environmental needs. Silver Surfers' Day will be held at ACOT on Friday, June 19 from 10.30am to 3pm.
