THE GHANIAN city/district of Afigya Kwabre has asked Okehampton Town Council if it would be interested in promoting twinning links with the West Devon town and district.
The town council discussed the possibility at a meeting of its policy and resources committee last week.
Okehampton already has a twin town in Craon in France and the West African district in the Ashanti region already has a twinning agreement with South Molton in North Devon.
Francis Mensah, of the Africa Global Sister Cities Foundation in Accra, wrote: 'As part of the global sister city movement of joint collaboration with world cities in dealing with respective contemporary issues in tourism, economy, agriculture, education, and business etc, we are pleased to request your acceptance in twinning with our community in this regard to raise mutual successes in various areas of venture.'
However, the council had already canvassed various organisations in the town about a possible link with the West African district but the response had up to now been 'luke warm', councillors were told.
Maureen McDonald, the policy's and resources chair wondered what the African district would get out of such a twinning link, or indeed, Okehampton itself.
The committee decided that further information was required before they could consider the proposal.
