A YOUNG man from Okehampton has recently launched a new venture with the hope of making the internet more accessible, less intimidating and safer for the people of the town. In conjunction with OK Leisure, Jake Cattrall, aged 19 and a former student of Okehampton College, has just opened 'Stonecage' a new cyber café for Okehampton. The launch of the new cyber cafe has caused confusion among some Okehampton residents who have asked what, exactly, a cyber café is. Jake said: 'An internet café or cyber café is a place where you can use a computer with internet access, although the café part isn't really promoted as we aren't exactly a café, more of an IT centre with snacks. 'We have computers that are dedicated to video games, you can come in and play, this is a great entertainment venue and there's nothing like it for miles. 'It's something I've always wanted to do since I left school and this has taken about four to five months to plan and make. 'Okehampton needs a good, well managed IT centre where people can get tuition without having to spend £200 to get someone to go to their house. 'I would love to see it become an entertainment centre for Okehampton, with clubs being set up, and it should be particularly useful for tourists.' Jake wants to use the café to promote internet awareness, both with safety aspects and how to optimise connection speed. With a view to the future, Jake hopes to soon be running both internet awareness and gaming evenings. Jake added: 'If you have always feared the internet you are very welcome to come in and have a play in a safe and supported environment.' There are six computers in total, with four set up to high specification gaming standards while the other two, built by Jake, offer high speed internet access with a unique operating system. Stonecage is open between 9am and 5pm and takes evening bookings between 6pm and 9pm. For information contact Jake on 01837 659402.
