I'M calling on all young people who don't know what career they want to pursue, what university course is right for them or what training they need for their perfect job to volunteer on a CSV 'Gap Year'.

I volunteered with CSV when I was 18 years old. The experience helped teach me really valuable skills which have been crucial to my career in journalism and now as a presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live. You can do the same!

I spent my own 'Gap Year' supporting a lady with physical disabilities to lead an independent life in her own home. It taught me to listen, to be patient and resilient. I saw a side of life I knew very little about, and it broadened my view of the world  Most importantly, I found volunteering enormously rewarding; it increased my self esteem, I learnt new life skills, I made friends and I had a huge amount of fun.

Volunteering with CSV gives young people direction and focus. After completing the 'Gap Year' many go on to pursue careers in nursing, social care, teaching and other professions. Employers are always impressed by voluntary experience and this can give you the 'edge' on other candidates.

For more information about gap year volunteering for people aged 18 to 35, call 0800 374 991 or visit the website to apply online.
