THE first phase of a trial run scheme to curb the actions of irresponsible dog owners in Simmons Park has been hailed as a success by Okehampton Town Council.

The town council has been examining the problem of increased dog fouling in the park, following several reports from the public on the issue.

A 'dog warden' has been introduced to the park, visiting at various times of the day throughout the last month.

Approved by the Security Industry Authority, the warden patrols Simmons Park and the surrounding area, wearing a high-visibility jacket marked 'enforcement officer'.

The officer aims to educate people on how to act responsibly in the park as well as eradicate irresponsible behaviour.

Chairman of the parks committee Cllr Dave Weekes said: 'Since the warden has been patrolling the park, the situation has really improved. The park is looking so much cleaner now and there is far less dog mess.

'The aspect of educating people is also encouraging and important to what we are trying to achieve in the park.'

The trial period will run for three months at a cost of £500 to the council.
