MEMBERS of the public are being invited to an open afternoon at Okehampton Town Hall.

The council is welcoming residents to visit the hall's council chamber on Wednesday, October 29, from 2pm to 4pm. The chamber is where the council meet on an almost weekly basis to exercise all the functions of a town council. It is thought that the council have been using the same room since moving from the medieval Guildhall in the 1820s.

The chamber is also used for the solemnization of civil marriages and for various civic ceremonies throughout the year, and therefore has a special place in the hearts of many who have attended such ceremonies over the years.

Some town councillors will be on hand to answer questions about the council's work and responsibilities, as well as talk about the history of the chamber and its many fine paintings.
