THE cleanliness of public toilets in Okehampton came under discussion at a recent town council meeting.

The authority is currently in talks with West Devon Borough Council to take on the cleaning of public toilets in Fairplace Gardens, Mill Road car park and Market Street.

Town and West Devon Borough Cllr Christine Marsh said members of the town council expected the toilets to be of a high standard.

She said: 'West Devon is in the process of going out to tender for a contract for waste street cleaning and toilets, of which Okehampton is a part, because the present contract has run its course.

'The time has come to look at this and the town council are in talks about how we can maintain the toilets, at no extra cost to tax payers.'

Cllr Marsh said if the borough council was to agree, the town council would look at its next course of action.

She said: 'We'd have to decide how and when we'd work it.

'We might employ somebody, but there are lots of things the town council would need to talk about and it would be put on the agenda.'

Okehampton town councillor Kay Bickley said it was important the toilets were clean for both residents and visitors of the town.

'We have spoken to West Devon Borough Council and are looking at the options.

'We want to make sure that when we have functions and events, that the toilets are open at the right time and that they are clean and hygienic for everybody to use.'
