BATTLING through the bad weather to fight at the Celtic Championships in Barnsley on February 4 proved very worthwhile for the Okehampton junior team of Muay Thai boxers, as one of their rising stars won a national title.
Sammy-Jo Luxton (pictured back row, centre), aged 12, became the new Celtic English Champion in her weight division as she defeated her opponent in a gruelling five-round contest. Sammy's strength and determination paid off as she forced a standing eight-count on her opponent in the final round.
The rest of the team also had fantastic showings at the event. Jordan Gale, 11, defended his English title and gave his best ever display of Muay Thai boxing techniques, coupled with great composure. Unfortunately Jordan did not get the judge's decision, but showed great sportsmanship in accepting his defeat.
Anya Barrett, 13, faced off against experienced fighter Hannah Turner for her English title. In a closely fought contest, Anya landed some impressive leg kicks, but was edged out by Hannah who managed to retain her title.
Chantelle Tippett, 10, and Will Shaw, 7, also had their first Thai boxing bouts, and made their coaches, Steve Pender and world professional fighter Christi Campbell, proud with impressive performances.
The team train with the Chaos Muay Thai boxing school, which holds classes around the area. Steve Pender has 17 years' experience in Thai boxing coaching, and Christi Campbell turned professional at age 15 and is a WPMF World Champion.
