A HOUSEHOLDER and her pets managed to escape uninjured from a serious fire at a bungalow in Okehampton which caused severe damage to the property.

Three crews from Okehampton, Hatherleigh and North Tawton, along with the Incident Command unit from Exmouth, were called to the bungalow on Broadmoor Lane at around 5.30pm on Sunday, after the female occupant discovered a fire.

The bungalow's remote location meant crews were unable to access a water supply at the property and had to use a shuttle system, filling tanks in town and then returning to the incident.

Crews were unable to get fire appliances close to the fire, forcing them to pump the water uphill.

The occupier escaped from the property uninjured, and several caged pets were rescued unharmed by fire crews using breathing apparatus.

The volunteer Fire Emergency and Support Service attended from Plymouth and supplied the female householder with clothing and emotional support throughout the incident. The cause of the fire was accidental.
