DESIGNS for a replacement memorial stone for the sister of Okehampton's greatest benefactor are to be subbmitted to the Diocese of Exeter.

Okehampton Town Council will put the new design forward after ensuring it is historically accurate.

The Sophia Simmons Memorial lies within the family plot in the churchyard of All Saints Parish Church, next to the grave of Sydney Simmons.

Sydney was born in the 1830s in Okehampton and spent the early years of his life in the town, later giving it its park, castle and a number of almshouses.

His sister, Sophia, was born on August 10, 1829, dying on June 25, 1869, aged 39.

Her headstone recently broke apart, having fallen into a state of disrepair. Before the memorial disintegrated, members of the town council agreed that Sydney Simmon's contribution to the town was so great that the council would meet the cost of repairing the memorial.

Now the stone has fully broken apart, the council has been investigating the cost of a replacement.

Projected costs are £1,860 plus VAT. Before submitting plans to the Diocese of Exeter, the council will ensure the engraved writing planned for the new stone matches that of the original.

Cllr Michael Ireland said: 'I think I reflect the feelings of everyone in the council to say that it should be historically accurate, and make sure the wording and style of the stone are faithful to the original. Otherwise the work would be pointless.'

The council intends to look through old photographs and records to ensure the new memorial stone's accuracy.
