THE weather could have been better but the 108th Okehampton Show continuing to live up to its billing ‘something for everybody’.
West Devon people are hardy folk and a few drops of rain were not going to put a downer on the annual event where ‘town meets country’ at Stoney Park.
Show secretary Claire Woodward said that livestock entries were very healthy with 1,000 sheep, more than last year, 230 cattle and 300 horses.
On the day she told the Times: ‘It’s going well and although some people may have been put off by the weather, numbers are not too bad. As usual its very much a traditional country show.
‘I want to thank all our many volunteers who helped make this show possible and, of course, all those people who come through the gates to enjoy and support it.’
In opening the show the Mayor of Okehampton, Councillor Paul Vachon, praised organisers for the ‘magnificent work’ they’ve done to make it an annual success.
He said: ‘You can see the pride in the faces of the exhibitors who have nurtured and pampered their animals and produce in preparation for this day. Only the best is good enough. And all the other exhibitors promoting products, services and providing food and entertainment making this exciting day out a showcase for Okehampton. You can see it in the faces of the visitors, especially the children.’
Show president Mark Wooldridge told show goers that he was very honoured to be this year’s president, especially as he is the fourth generation of his family to hold the honour.
‘This show is so important to keep rural traditions going and bring both those from the town and country together. It’s great to meet so many people here I know, some that I only see at this special show.’
There was plenty to engage the crowds in the main ring.
Among the great sights were the carriage driving displays, the terrier racing, the parade of hounds, the vintage vehicle parade and cheering the teams in the the tug of war.
The entertainment ring certainly lived up to its name with displays by the North Devon Gun Dog, West Country Falconry, the Victor Pitts Sheep Dogs, Cogs and Wheels Morris Dancers and the Fun Family Dog Show. while The Terry Moule ferret racing was a crowd pleaser as ever.
