OKEHAMPTON-based folk and community arts development charity Wren Music is extending a dancing project to a new area of Devon, thanks to support from the National Lottery through Sport England.

The Feet First For Families project aims to introduce children, young people and families across Devon to folk dance in all its forms, such as social dance, step dancing and morris dancing.

During May, Wren Music is offering free folk dance sessions to schools and youth clubs throughout the Okehampton Learning Community, which streches from Lewtrenchard to Hatherleigh to North Tawton to Chagford. All of the dance sessions will be led by experienced community dance leaders and professional folk musicians.

These will be followed by a family folk dance and workshop on Saturday May 22 at Okehampton Primary School. Young people can bring along parents and family members and discover what fun they can have with dancing, whatever their age.

The family folk dance will be held from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. All young people and their families are invited to come along and have a great time. Each dance is introduced and explained, and no experience is necessary to join in the dances. There will be live music too.

For those who want to explore folk dancing a little more, during the afternoon from 2.30pm to 4.30pm there will be a fun workshop where people can try out all sorts of smart moves and dance steps. The organisers suggest bringing a picnic tea.

Entry to the workshop and family folk dance is only £3 per child, £5 for one child and one adult, or £10 per family of two adults and up to three children, or one adult and up to four children. For those who want to come just for the family folk dance, entry is £2 per child or adult. Please note that all adults will need to be accompanied by a young person. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Advance booking is recommended. Reserve your place at or call 01837 53754 with names and ages of attenders and whether you will be coming for the whole event or just the dance.
