ON Wednesday, July 8, at the top of Station Road, Okehampton, at around 11.30am, my 61-year-old Mum fell and broke her wrist while out walking her dog. Finding that she couldn't drive due to her injury, and realising she hadn't brought her mobile phone with her, she flagged down a YODEL van in order to ask the driver if he wouldn't mind calling a taxi for her. After taking in the sight of my poor mother, clearly shaken and in pain, struggling with a five month old border collie, and covered in mud from her fall, the driver of the van refused to help her, citing his pressing need to deliver his parcels which were 'already three minutes late'. This man obviously felt that a thirty second phone call to help an injured, elderly woman was not worth allowing his delivery to be three and a half minutes late. Not only that, but he was demonstrably angry at being stopped. My Mum, who would never take advantage of anyone and who has a heart of gold, was left to walk home with the high spirited dog and a broken bone, too afraid to ask anyone for help after suffering the ire of this man. I have tried to email Yodel and tell them this, and on the only email address I could find, after much online trawling, an out of office message came back to me, telling me to talk to customer services.
