PEOPLE of all ages from across the Ashwater parish gathered together on March 21 to celebrate the first five years of their new parish hall.

Over 70 attended an afternoon tea party with plenty of socialising, some friendly competition with quizzes and games and a fantastic tea provided by a team of volunteers. Entertainment was provided by Ashwater's own Community Steel Band which provided an uplifting atmosphere.

There was an opportunity for locals to share memories with a display of local photographs created by Letitia Yetman which included a selection left by the late Marcus and Dot Cole, while the school provided a colourful display of mosaic artwork.

Vice chairman of the hall committee John Forward, who was instrumental in the design of the hall and has been involved from the outset, cut a celebratory cake and explained the enormous amount of hard work that went into developing the hall over a ten year period, replacing the existing sub-standard facility.

Many of those who played a role in the success of building today's hall for the parish were present, but John also reminded visitors of the contribution of the late Jack Moon, who generously gave the land on which the new hall stands.

Celebrations continued into the evening with dancing to local band Iguana Sunset from Bradworthy. The band played a mix of rock and blues that had everyone on their feet for their big finale.

Colin Vallance, chairman of the hall committee, said: 'The hall has been extensively used over the last five years and really is regarded as an important aspect of the parish, so it was not surprising to see so many join together to celebrate this occasion.

'We are certain that the hall will continue to be a success, so much so that an extension is currently being planned to ensure we can meet the growing needs of the community and make sure it really works for them.

'Proceeds from the event will help towards our fundraising for this extension.'

The trustees of the hall expressed a big thank you to everyone who has been involved in its development and its success over the last five years, in particular to all those who have used it.

Chairman of the hall Colin also thanked everyone involved in the event, including those who volunteered on the day, ran games and activities, provided food, donated raffle prizes or supported by attending, making the day a great success.
