WREN Music is bringing together two choirs and its fiddle orchestra, to present a special West Devon seasonal winter celebration this year.
There will be 50 singers, 20 fiddle players, mince pies, mulled wine and a Christmas hamper raffle all in the cosy setting of the Church Hall on Market Street in Okehampton.
The event takes place on Tuesday, December 13 and the concert begins at 7.30pm. Admission is by donation and the proceeds of the night will go towards Wren’s youth programme.
Choir leader Paul Wilson said: ‘Our choirs love to meet up and sing together . . we have all learned special repertoire for this concert, as well as a couple of items all together to finish the night. The performers have all been working hard and we’re really looking forward to seeing in the festive season in Okehampton.’
Fiddle orchestra leader Becki Driscoll added: ‘We’ve got a lovely mix of performers at this concert. There’s a wide range of sounds and sentiments and people will be travelling from far and wide to take part. Each group has prepared something unique for the occasion — it’ll be a treasure box of familiar and unusual pieces, with a strong seasonal flavour.’
Some of the songs will be old folk carols, a few new arrangements of very well known pieces and some others have been arranged specially for this event.
The West Devon Voices in Common Choir is hosting the event, and the two other groups performing are the new Men Sing group, featuring some great male-voice sounds and the fiddle orchestra directed by Becki Driscoll.
Wren Music CEO Marilyn Tucker said: ‘We’re very proud of our music leaders and all they do for our music group and choir members. I’m especially keen to hear the new Men’s group on this occasion run by Paul. They’ve had their first fabulously successful outing to Sidmouth Folk Festival this year, as well as busking around Okehampton during our own folk weekend.’
