Devon two
Devonport High School Old Boys 10
North Tawton 105
INDEED this is the correct score as North Tawton hit the century mark – a rare feat in rugby.
They gave a somewhat depleted and poor Plymouth team a lesson in how to score tries — 15 of them in fact and with James Bowden only missing one conversion.
The biggest worry for the visitors was before the kick-off and whether the home team were going to have enough players to even start the game. Eventually some of their players rolled up with minutes to spare.
It took North Tawton 15 minutes to score the four tries and secure the bonus point and from then on they just keep going. A try each for Matty Dennis, Shaun Braime, Simon Quick, Bill Sharp, James Bowden two each for Fewings and Craig Dennis kept the scoreboard more than ticking along.
However, it was the six tries from Matt Baker that put him in prime position for leading try scorer of the season. With the absence of James Miller through illness, Matt did a good job as captain.
It was a shame that any side struggle to get 15 men on the field for what was a league fixture but it has to be said that every DHSOB player who took to the pitch never gave up and played in the spirit of the game.
This match became a run out for Tawton with the added risk of picking up a knock or two.
The biggest gathering of NTFRC ‘who’s who’ took place on Friday for Helen Solomon’s funeral. Many were not able to get into the chapel from those who wished to pay their respects.
Chris Phare, from the club said: ‘That in itself is a testimony to Helen. She wasn’t just a member of the club, she was and will always be part of its DNA.
‘To watch my own son playing alongside hers for her club is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Long may it continue.’
