Devon Intermediate Cup

Tavistock RFC 6

Okehampton RFC 10

OKEHAMPTON did just enough to win this Devon Intermediate Cup Tie on another warm, sunny afternoon in Tavistock.

The visitors took to the field with a young and inexperienced side against a Tavistock team struggling to find form, having been relegated from Western Counties (West) last season.

Play in the first period was scrappy with much of the play in the Okes’ half. Oke were awarded a penalty for holding on but lost the ensuing line-out. On 14 minutes Tavistock opened the scoring with a penalty by number nine Ewan Smith. Oke missed a penalty shortly after. Then, another penalty awarded to the Okes was reversed for some verbals to the referee.

At this stage the Oke forwards were beginning to dominate but the Tavistock backs were in the ascendancy but failing to capitalise. Just before half-time penalties were swapped to leave the score at 6-3 at the interval.

Oke made a bright start to the second period with Gaz making a great break only to find that he had left his support some 25 metres away. This was followed by another good break from Jack Davey but again it came to nothing. Oke made a good defensive exit from their own 22.

The half again deteriorated into a scrappy affair with neither side being able to exert dominance. Man of the match for the Okes was centre Matt Johns who looked solid in defence and always threatening in attack.

With time running out, the Okes were awarded a five metre scrum and managed to get the nudge on for a try scored by number eight Tom McGratton.
