HORNETS RFC from Weston Super Mare brought two teams to play Okehampton in a pre-season test for both teams and renewed the friendly acquaintance from last season when the teams were in the same league.
The first XVs kicked off first and the early stages showed that both teams were rusty after the summer break.
The Okehampton pack soon got into their stride and scored two tries to put the home team ahead at half time.
The object was to give as many players some game time on both sides, and changes at half time saw Oke in the ascendancy. The backs began to click and ran in three good tries in the second half.
The final score was not important in the circumstances — both coaches were pleased with the performances though both declared that there was some work to put in before the season starts again in earnest in September.
The second XVs then played their game, which was a much closer encounter – ending 35-25 to the visitors – with both teams playing an open running game.
The performances on the day augur well for the coming season and provided a great afternoon’s entertainment for the supporters from both teams.
Club spokesman Dave Potter said: ‘The coming season promises to be an interesting one for the club as they try to adjust to life in the Level 5 South West Premier League. This is the highest league position the club has ever achieved, providing greater challenges than have been faced up to now. Please come and support your local team in their endeavours and help drive them on to achieve further success.’
