IT WAS a true white wedding – in every sense – for Sam Bullingham and his bride Katie Bray when they tied the knot in the thick of a blizzard last Wednesday.

Sam and Katie, who farm organically at Taw River Dairy near Sampford Courtenay, got married at the church at St Martin on the Lizard in Cornwall where Katie’s family live.

From the moment the first snowflakes started falling, they were determined not to let snow bring a halt to their big day, despite a deluge that saw even the vicar having to abandon his car.

Canon David Miller, from Helston, was spotted walking the last three miles to the church in St Martin, after being forced to abandon his car in heavy drifts. Luckily, a guest noticed his dog collar and gave him a lift to the church.

Another guest took a detour through cauliflower fields to avoid a road blocked by snow to pick up the bridesmaids and with a 4x4 on hand to drive the bride and groom from the church, a friend gritting the church entrance and tractors on standby in case anyone got stuck, the planned noon wedding went ahead just 90 minutes late.

Katie said: ‘It was sunny at 7am when we were having our hair done, then it started snowing and just got worse – it was crazy.’

However, she said that despite everything going on around her she ‘didn’t actually panic at all’ and was able to see the funny side.

After the wedding the bride and groom had pictures taken at Poldhu beach with a reception at a nearby hotel.

The next day Sam and Katie travelled back to their dairy at Taw River Dairy, where they produce ice cream and milk, to make deliveries. After which they were planning to fly out to Venice for their honeymoon, weather permitting.
