Councillor gives summer funding boost to youth café

Young people in Tavistock have received a funding boost for their packed programme of summer holiday activities.

Tavistock Youth Café (TYC) has thanked Tavistock’s county councillor Cllr Debo Sellis after she presented them with a £2,000 cheque.

The café’s youngsters are keeping busy and active during the summer with another action-packed programme thanks to Cllr Sellis’ individual locality budget for spending on causes linked to the Tavistock and Gulworthy area she represents.

The funding will help TYC's dedicated youth workers deliver exciting opportunities for local young people aged 11 to 19. These include day trips, creative workshops, community events, volunteering opportunities, a five-day sailing residential expedition and will culminate in the annual Tavi Trails trail bike jam on August 30. All activities are offered at little or no cost.

TYC manager Vicki said the support was invaluable: "The only way we can continue offering these valuable experiences is through external funding and community support, which we seek throughout the year.”

Vicki added: “For years, Tavistock Youth Café has been at the heart of the local community, giving young people a safe place to connect, build confidence, learn new skills and make lasting memories. With local support and funding grants/donations, the team can continue creating life-changing experiences and helping young people across Tavistock and the surrounding area thrive.”

Cllr Sellis said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to support the Tavistock Youth Café, who continue to make such a positive difference to so many young people. I'd encourage anyone who wants to invest in the next generation to consider donating to the youth café. Young people are our future."
