As part of the 2026 Heritage Open Days Festival, English Heritage will host a “Building a Castle” event at Okehampton Castle on September 19.

The day will include four one-hour workshops which will demonstrate how castles are built. Members of the public will be able to try out lime making, mixing of mortars, timber preparation, making of floors, roofs, and doors and arch building.

The workshops are suitable for adults and children aged six and above. Any child under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Okehampton Castle’s origins can be traced back to soon after the Norman Conquest when one of William I’s knights built an earth and timber castle, later adding a stone keep.
