AN artist from Okehampton is to have her work exhibited in London’s Mall Galleries after being shortlisted for a prestigious art prize.
Tania Skeaping has had a painting shortlisted for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize. The prize rewards outstanding examples of representational painting from artists across the UK.
Created in 2005 by The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and The Lynn Foundation, the open competition champions the skills of draughtsmanship and figurative painting. This year’s exhibition aims to reflect the wealth of talent among both emerging and established artists.
Tania’s painting Abandoned Look-Out will be part of an exhibition of shortlisted works displayed at the Mall Galleries from March 7 to March 13. The painting depicts a look-out post built in the Second World War by the Germans as part of the defence against a possible allied landing. The outpost is a poignant reminder of Europe’s past and is gradually being taken away by the sea.
Tania has a long-standing interest in art, having painted since leaving school and teaching art at secondary school level. She has also worked in the art world including seven years at renowned auctioneer Sotheby’s. She has exhibited her work with Devon Open Studios and Drawn to the Valley, receiving good support from local people.
She said: ’It is thrilling to have been selected for a national exhibition which will show in London and Guildford and I am looking forward to going to the private view in March and seeing all the work.
’Dartmoor is a constant source of inspiration for me and I make sketches and take photographs on the moor before using them as a basis for a painting. I am interested all aspects of the moor; from the abandoned buildings, mine workings and rock formations to the delicate mosses and lichens.
’I am especially fascinated by the subtle colours and patterns made by the bracken, gorse, heather and grasses at various times of the year and in different types of weather.’
