A SPECIAL train service on Friday, April 12 will provide enthusiasts the chance to travel the entire length of the Dartmoor Railway line from Okehampton to Yeoford.

The 'Dartmoor Explorer' train, organised by The Dartmoor Society, will be worked by a veteran former British Rail main line diesel locomotive, with first class former British Rail Inter-City coaches.

It will leave Okehampton Station at 10.30am for a round trip of just over 30 miles.

It will include a stop of about 45 minutes at Meldon, where passengers can alight for a walk across the adjacent spectacular viaduct that spans the West Okement Valley.

Model railway layouts of Ilfracombe, Okehampton to Meldon and Halwill Junction will be specially available at Meldon Quarry for viewing. The whole ride should be completed by 1pm.

Dr Tom Greeves, chairman of the Dartmoor Society, said: 'This will be a great opportunity for an enjoyable spring excursion on an historic railway line.

'There are many features of interest to see, as well as spectacular countryside, and views to the high moor.

'Meldon Viaduct is one of the nation's engineering marvels of the Victorian age.'

For Dartmoor Society members, tickets cost £10 per adult and £5 per child. For non-members, tickets cost £12 per adult and £6 per child. Children under 5 can ride for free.
