A REFORM UK council candidate has raised concerns about his and his wife’s safety after his Tavistock home was targeted by vandals.
Former soldier Gary Clifford is proposing to stand for Reform in the West Devon Borough Council and Tavistock Town Council elections next May.
Eggs were lobbed at his car and tomato ketchup at his living room window over the past week.
He has reported the incidents to the police and to Reform UK.
Gary says the attack makes him even more determined to stand as a Reform candidate for both borough and town, saying his message is “stop your petty attempts to intimidate me”.
He has been upset by the death of his fellow Reform UK campaigner, veteran politician Ann Widdecombe at her remote Dartmoor home, revealing he texted Ann – who had become a friend through their mutual campaigning for Reform UK – on the morning of her death in July.
He had been going to call in on her that day, but she put him off because she had to do TV interviews that day via videolink, about Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s resignation as an MP the day before.
Joshua Kerry, 29, from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, has been charged with Ann Widdecombe’s murder.
Gary said: “Due to recent tragic events on the other side of Dartmoor, Reform UK take this type of intimidation very seriously and, consequently, I’m having more cameras installed at my house for me and my family’s safety.
“Make no mistake, things like this harden my resolve to stand as a candidate. I intend to carry out common sense Reform policies at local level. When elected, we, Reform, will work closely with the police to seriously clamp down on anti-social behaviour, littering and fly tipping.”
Gary, who worked in telecommunications after an Army career where he specialised in radar, believes egg was thrown at his car, parked near his home over the weekend of October 3-4.
“There’s a bit of anti-social behaviour and I thought it was just part of that,” he said.
However, later on, he and his wife Julie were sitting in their lounge, and heard something knocking against their window.
“We heard a bang, it was more like a bit of rubbish being thrown against the window so we didn’t even look but the next morning we came out and there was tomato sauce everywhere. It looked like they stood at the front door because it was over the window.”
He added: “I have never been involved in politics until a couple of years ago and the last general election. I just thought the country was going down the pan. I’m very much wanting to work for people in Tavistock and make it a nice place to live.”
Gary stood unsuccessfully to become Reform UK as Devon county councillor in the town back in 2025, coming third behind sitting Tory councillor Debo Sellis, who retained the seat, and Lib-Dem Holly Greenberry-Pullen.
