Throgmorton Cup 2nd Round

Dartmouth 2

Okehampton Argyle 0

ARGYLE had chances to win this Cup match against Premier Division opposition, but with Okehampton's attack having an off day, Dartmouth went through with two second half goals.

Okehampton matched their hosts in the first half and put together some good approach work in midfield, but generally it was a day where defences were on top and both teams were forced into long shots from outside the area.

Ben Ferguson went close after twelve minutes when receiving a lay-back just outside the box, he fired in a strong shot which was held onto by the home keeper at the second attempt.

On 30 minutes, Dartmouth were awarded a penalty when James Williams missed his header inside the box and the ball struck his hand. The home side's Kevin Causley fired in a fierce shot, but Okes' keeper Harry Geering did brilliantly to push it over the bar. Argyle came back into the game after this and seven minutes later were desperately unlucky not to take the lead, when Frankie Nomah-Koneh, who had a quiet match, showed a flash of his undoubted skill when he beat two defenders and cut in from the left only to see his shot beat the keeper and pass across the face of the Dartmouth goal.

Okehampton started the second-half well and again could have taken the lead with a little luck and better finishing. Luke Alden, Ed Squire and Ben Waters all went close in the first fifteen minutes of the second half.

But it was the home side who got the vital first goal on 65 minutes when good approach work on the left saw a header rebound off Argyle's crossbar. The rebound was fired back in by Dartmouth's Dan Griffiths and Stuart Entwhistle had the misfortune to deflect the ball past Geering and into his own net. The game was sewn up on 75 minutes when an Argyle attack broke down due to a poor pass from midfield. The ball was played deep right for the home side's Matt Micklewright, whose cross-cum-shot floated over Geering and into the Oke net.

This was not one of Argyle's best performances but they matched their hosts from one division higher for the majority of the game. Stuart Entwhistle and Alex Wren had fine games at the back for Okehampton and Matt Sanders and Luke Alden showed considerable skill in midfield.
