GILLIAN'S hairdressers on Crediton Road is supporting the Okehampton Starlight Moorwalk on Friday October 7, with owner Gillian Lawson taking part in the walk herself.
Gillian is part of the group of dedicated Okehampton volunteers called the Starlight Ladies, organising the event to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. She has even encouraged her colleagues to take part: 'All the girls in the salon are walking. I gave them no choice!
'The support's been great, I've had lots of sponsors so far, from customers and local businesses to my colleagues, friends and family.
'I've not set myself any sort of fundraising target as I want to just focus on raising as much as possible for Cancer Research UK.'
Starting from Okehampton Rugby Club, the walk is a six-mile route to Klondyke and onto Rough Tor before returning to the rugby club. The walk will be officially started by BBC Radio Devon's Matt Woodley. At the finish there will be a disco and refreshments.
The Starlight Ladies are asking everyone keen to take part to turn up in fancy dress, with a prize for the most original costume. They are also asking for walkers to bring along a written personal message of hope for anyone they know who has been affected by cancer.
Last year's event raised around £9,000, and organisers are hoping for a similar figure this year.
Registration costs £10 with children under 12 allowed to accompany their parents for free. Organisers are asking for adults to try and raise a minimum of £50 each.
Application forms for the Starlight Moorwalk are available in Gillians Hairdressers, Quinns Hairdressers, Slimming World, Bob Gee and Farmer Luxtons Butchers. Alternatively you can download a
