Tavistock is ready to welcome thousands of visitors from throughout the region to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds of today’s (Wednesday, October 14) eagerly awaited annual Goose Fair.
The town centre has been closed off to traffic with 200 stalls lining Plymouth Road and Bedford Square, selling street food and fresh food (including artisan and locally produced) and crafts, gifts, clothing, homeware, pet products and accessories,
The air will resound with the sounds of children (many having the day off from local schools for the event) enjoying the fun fair in the Bedford Car Park with a big wheel towering above the town hall on Bedford Square.
Live entertainment will entertain visitors all day, satisfying every taste at Castlebridge School site on Plymouth Road, including an evening Abba Tribute Band called ‘Take a Chance on Us’.
Town Mayor Anne Johnson, who has been coming to Tavistock Goose Fair since she was a child, said: “We welcome people to come along to what is a family day out. A place to meet up and socialise with people you might not have seen for a while.”
Meanwhile, the pannier and Butcher’s Hall markets are also open. The fair runs until 9pm tonight.
Because Tavistock centre is closed to traffic, a one-way system is in force with widespread temporary parking bans until tomorrow (Thursday) morning. Park and ride services with £3 adult and £1 child shuttle bus rides, give drivers an alternative to driving into town, at Whitchurch Down, Yelverton Airfield and Gulworthy. Details on the day’s events and transport are at Tavistock Town Council website: https://www.tavistock.gov.uk/council-services/goose-fair
