Tavistock Potter's Market is celebrating its sixth annual event this year, organised by the Westcountry Potters Association.

The Potter's Market is free to attend and 25 ceramic artists will display their work from domestic ware to more decorative items.

One of the exhibitors is ceramicist Mathias Landwehr who also runs 45 Southside Gallery, situated on Plymouth Barbican.

He said the Potter’s Market is a “wonderful event with a lovely atmosphere” where you meet the maker and may even “start off your Christmas shopping”.

Mathias became interested in ceramics when he moved to the South West from his home city Hamburg, in Germany. Opening a gallery, selling mainly ceramics, he gradually became more interested in the processes and techniques of making these pieces of art.He said that evening classes at the Arts University Plymouth opened up a “whole new world” and soon, Mathias was “hooked on ceramics” as an artform.Mathias makes stoneware slab or hand-built pieces, glazed with abstract minimalistic but colourful decoration.

Designs and shapes are influenced by early modernist and mid-century painters, sculptors and potters.

Every ceramic item is unique. Some items will be more artistically sculptural, while others more practical. The Tavistock Potter's Market will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, 10am-4pm at the Butcher's Hall, for one day only.

Then association was formed in 1993 and it has 700 members across the South West. It aim is to “increase public enthusiasm for the qualities of handmade pottery by an active programme of interesting and informative events”.

They also aim to provide opportunities for the “enjoyable and stimulating exchange of ideas with fellow potters at social gatherings”, such as the upcoming event in Tavistock.
