THE town hall had a group of young visitors last week as two Beaver groups visited Okehampton mayor Cllr the Rev Mike Davies in the town council chamber.

The visit was a chance for the youngsters to learn more about the history of Okehampton, with the mayor taking the time to talk to children about his gowns and chain, and the hats and gowns of the town mace bearers. The Beavers also got to see some of the measuring equipment from when the town hall was also the weights and measures office.

During their visit, the mayor showed the groups a copy of an old circular map of Okehampton, which dates back to 1756. Many of the town's streets share names with meadows on the map, such as Moyses Meadow, Wonnacotts and Upper Crooked Meadow.

If any other groups are interested in visiting the mayor at the town council chambers, contact the town clerk in person at the town hall or by calling 01837 53179.
