The Post Office has issued an appeal for anyone interested in reopening Whitchurch Post Office to get in touch.

The post office closed on October 10, after the postmistress resigned.

One Whitchurch resident said it was “absolutely shocking”.

She has written to the Post Office following the closure to give her views.

“I said that residents now have to go into Tavistock town centre and the counter there only has two tills (used to be five) and some days there is only one till open!” she said.

“I also pointed out that many years ago, the Tavistock branch was not a convenience store, but purely a Post Office, just like it is in Okehampton. I have received a reply from the Post Office which says “We currently have no information regarding the Whitchurch Post Office closing”.

Now a Post Office spokesperson has stated that the organisation is looking for another retail premises to consider accommodating a post office in Whitchurch so that it can reopen.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Whitchurch Post Office regrettably closed on October 10 due to the resignation of the postmaster.

“We know how important a Post Office is to a community and the vacancy is currently advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk and we would like to hear from local retailers.

“In the interim the nearest alternative branch is Tavistock. Bestway Retail, which operates the branch has added additional staffing and increased Post Office availability by adjusting the opening hours.

“When the main Post Office counter closes after core hours (Monday – Friday: 9am – 5pm; Saturday: 9am – 12.30pm), the out of hours till is still available. The new opening hours are Monday to Saturday: 7am – 8pm; Sunday: 8am – 7pm. This provides 89 hours of service per week.”
