HEAVY snowfalls in the East Cornwall area on Tuesday sparked warnings to motorists — and an extra day off for children in the area, as schools and colleges were forced to close.

A blanket of around three inches of snow fell in the area, resulting in six local schools being closed — Callington Community College, Callington Primary School, Duchy College, Gunnislake Primary School, St Dominic Primary School and Stoke Climsland Primary School.

Callington Police were called out to deal with incidents caused by the weather, including a fuel tanker which had got stuck on Saltash Road, Callington, at 8.30am, causing the road to be blocked for approximately two hours.

Services by Caradon District Council were provided by a skeleton staff on Tuesday, due to the adverse travel conditions, and local residents were asked to limit their enquiries to essential matters only. Housing repairs were only for emergency cases.

The refuse collection service was suspended and people were asked to take back their waste until Tuesday, February 10.
