APPLICATIONS are now being taken for the 2014 Okehampton Battle of the Bands competition.

The 2014 event is looking for the best in unsigned talent of all genres and ages to showcase its tenth anniversary year.

Eighteen acts will compete for prizes donated by Alive Music Studios, Chagstock, Project Music and SWH Signs.

All entrants need is 20 minutes of material of any musical style — from acoustic to a cappella, pop to punk, rap to rock, all genres are welcome.

Organisers are keen to include as wide a variety of musical styles as possible, welcoming entrants of all ages, ability and musical background.

Organiser Chris Hodgson said: 'It doesn't matter if you have years of experience or whether this is your first ever gig — once you are on that stage it is a completely level playing field. Live entertainment is real and immediate, and the judges will be looking for that little bit of magic which only live music can deliver.'

As always the competition will culminate with the Party in the Park. As well as the competition finale, the party will also have exhibition mountain bike riding from Andrei Burton and a headline performance from AC/DC tribute band Live Wire. BBC Radio Devon is also getting involved as part of its BBC Introducing programme.

The three heats will be held in the Charter Hall on June 25, July 2 and July 9, with the Party in the Park finale taking place in Simmons Park on Saturday, August 2.
