Two casualties were taken to hospital after an incident involving two cars and a pedestrian, sparking an emergency response which closed a Tavistock petrol station.

Fire, ambulance and police units attended Morrisons supermarket fuel forecourt yesterday morning, Saturday, September 26. The air ambulance flew overhead, but did not land as the situation was soon declared safe.

The petrol station was closed for several hours while fire crews made the cars safe from causing a fire hazard to the pumps and fuel storage tanks and other cars. Two people were freed after becoming trapped in the cars involved in the collision. Two people were taken to hospital with ‘minor injuries’ and two treated at the scene.

The bonnets of the two cars were opened to disconnect the engine batteries to reduce the risk of sparks igniting ny spilled fuel and fumes.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 9.30am on Saturday, September 26, to a road traffic collision in Tavistock. We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer, and a first responder to the scene. We conveyed two patients by land ambulance to Derriford Hospital.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers were called to Morrison’s petrol station in Plymouth Road, Tavistock, at around 9.30am on Saturday 26 September following a report of collision between two vehicles and a pedestrian. Fire and ambulance also attended. Two people were taken to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries.”

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called at 9.40am to a road traffic accident involving two vehicles and a pedestrian on the petrol station forecourt. We sent two appliances and there were four casualties in total. Two were released by fire crews using hydraulic rescue equipment from a vehicle and two were transported to hospital.”
