A Hatherleigh man is walking 87 miles in 48 hours next Friday – and it’s going to be his biggest endurance challenge since leaving the British Army.

Ex British Army dad, Craig Harris is raising vital funds for Hatherleigh Community Primary School’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) programs, but it’s going to be a “personal battle”.

Craig, who left the army as a Lance Corporal after serving as a Royal Engineer, lives with Popliteal Artery Entrapment Syndrome (PAES), a rare vascular condition. His calf muscles compress the main artery to his lower legs during exercise.

He said: “This severely restricts blood flow and causes intense, chronic pain. Every single mile will be a hurdle. However, I chose this specific hardship because the physical barriers I face on the road directly mirror the daily resilience, effort, and determination shown by SEND students as they navigate the world. If they can fight their battles every day, I can fight this one for 48 hours.”

Raising funds for SEND provision is “deeply personal” to Craig, and his wife Sarah Harris, as their young daughter has emerging SEN needs. So, Craig’s taking on this endurance challenge to raise much-needed funds for all children at the school with special educational needs.

Craig has launched a JustGiving fundraiser which will raise money for specialised sensory equipment, inclusive activities and learning tools for the school.

The gruelling walk will begin at the Hatherleigh school on the morning of Friday, October 23 – and locals are encouraged to come and cheer Craig on.

On Sunday, October 25, Craig is anticipated to get to the finish line (Hatherleigh school) at 9am – and people are welcome to come along and celebrate the completion of the challenge then.

Craig said: “Thank you so much for your generosity, your cheers, and your support. Let's make a massive difference for these brilliant kids.”
