BEAVERS, cubs and scouts groups have been using the Okehampton College ICT suite to design a new badge.

The group has been mentored by college teacher Marc Coton, who in his spare time is the district commissioner for Mid Devon Scouts.

The old badge scheme has recently been replaced with more challenging staged badges and many more activity and staged badges. The Scout movement still retains the ’core’ skills with knots, first aid, camping and team skills with the addition of nautical and air challenges as well as more in depth challenge badges.

As a generation of computer natives, the young people are able to utilise their computer and creative skills and develop these accordingly.

The Scouting movement is growing in the UK with local groups in Okehampton, South Zeal, North Tawton, Chulmleigh, Bow, Crediton and Tedburn and Cheriton Bishop. There is a desperate need to have leaders in beavers and cubs in Chagford with the town’s cub group due to close at Easter unless a leader can be found.
