Cadet Sergeant Rosemary White, who has been a member of Okehampton Detachment since 2021, has been praised for successfully commanding the entire civic parade on September 12, including the mayoral party.

Sgt White was given the responsibility of Parade Commander and worked alongside her mum, Sergeant Sally-Ann White, who led the Okehampton Army cadets, issuing drill instructions to the whole parade, in front of hundreds of onlookers.

Her performance was universally praised by the councillors in attendance, including Mayor Richard Coleman and the Deputy Mayor Laura Bird. She will now be ending her time with the cadet force on a high as she is due to turn 18 soon and attend university.

Detachment Commander Sam Caunter described his pride in the 17-year-old, adding that the role was a significant responsibility. He said: “To see Sgt White step forward and take command of the parade was a hugely proud moment for me and the whole detachment.

“The confidence she showed to stand in front of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, councillors and the rest of the parade, giving instructions and taking responsibility, is a fantastic achievement for someone of just 17 years old.

“It is exactly the sort of opportunity that the Army Cadet Force is about — developing young people, building their confidence and giving them the skills to lead. Sgt White did herself, her family and Okehampton Detachment proud today.

“The Okehampton Civic Parade is an important local occasion, celebrating the community spirit of our town and bringing together civic representatives, organisations and members of the community.”

This year’s parade followed a shorter route than usual, concluding at St James Chapel on Fore Street, where the civic proceedings continued.

The Army Cadet Force offers young people opportunities to develop leadership skills and confidence, take on responsibility and become involved in their communities.
