POLICE are again warning West Devon residents to be aware of cold callers following reports they have been working in the local areas. Complaints over the use of hard selling tactics over the phone and at home have been received by the crime prevention officer for West Devon. WPC Angie Frost wants local residents to be aware that this type of crime is taking place in West Devon. Cold callers are people who call at home to sell a product or offer to do work in and around the home and is someone who is unknown to the resident. Cold callers are also people who make first contact by phone and encourage people to buy a product or offer their skills. WPC Frost said: 'The best way to protect yourself and avoid being swindled, is not to open the door to them in the first place. 'If they cold call by phone, just say no thank you and if they continue to try to persuade you, hang up the phone. Don't feel guilty — these criminals are not your friends.' She added that if these people call, always check with a neighbour or the Yellow Pages first and get at least three quotes to make sure the caller is genuine. Anyone who is over 60 can ring Care and Repair first on 01822 613638 and they can advise on all jobs, big and small. In an emergency, if someone is at the door and will not go away, ring 999, or to report what has happened contact the police switchboard on 08452 777444. If this type of crime has already happened to you and you have not yet reported it, contact WPC Frost on 01822 813806.
