A Chagford-based charity has launched a crowdfunding appeal to raise money for a new reuse hub in Moretonhampstead, which no longer has any charity shops.
Proper Job aims to raise £15,000 to set up the new hub, which will be located in the town’s former newsagents at 1 Court Street and provide people with a place to donate reusable items and purchase affordable second-hand goods. The project comes after Moretonhampstead lost its charity shop and local clothing banks.
Chief executive of Proper Job Alison Sallis, said: "This project is about creating a community asset. We know community reuse works because we've been doing it successfully in Chagford for more than three decades. Now we have an opportunity to work with the people of Moretonhampstead to create something that belongs to the town and reflects local needs.
"Local people approached us and asked whether we could help bring a community reuse space back to Moretonhampstead. Since then, we've been working with local residents and organisations to develop a vision for a welcoming community hub that supports people, strengthens the local economy and helps protect the environment."
Funds raised through the campaign will help cover building preparation, shelving and displays, shop fittings, equipment, legal fees and the first three months' rent while the project becomes established.
The charity has already secured more than £6,000 towards the £15,000 target and has been accepted onto the Aviva Community Fund Match Funding Programme, meaning eligible donations may be matched to help the campaign reach its goal faster.
Proper Job operates the Resource Centre and Uptown shop in Chagford. The charity provides a space for residents to access affordable goods while reducing waste and conserving resources. It also provides volunteering opportunities, employment, repair activities, workshops and community events.
