CHILDREN from Spreyton Primary School have made a special time capsule to mark the 575th anniversary of St Michael’s Church at Spreyton.

It was presented to the churchwarden by many of the children who put the time capsule together at a special ceremony recently.

The plan is to hide it in the church for it to be opened in 25 years’ time when the church marks it 600th anniversary.

The school’s headteacher Emma Donne revealed some of the contents to those gathered in the church.

Included are toys, fidget spinners, pictures of some of the children, pictures they had painted, a booklet made by the older class, school uniform, paintings of Spreyton Church and letters from the children for those opening the time capsule to read in 25 years’ time. The headteacher also included a letter to be opened at that far off date.

The event offered the chance to browse historical displays in the church and there were also activities for the children, which included looking for interesting items within the church.

Among those attending the event on Saturday, September 26 were Spreyton’s oldest resident Douglas Endacott, 92, and his wife Betty, 89, who were married in the church 66 years ago on October 26.

There was also an impressive display of sword-fighting outside by the group Mystic Swords, which drew the crowds.

Afterwards the children were invited to learn sword-fighting using plastic foam swords.

Cream teas were served on Tom Cobley public house throughout the day.

The anniversary was also marked the following day, Sunday, September 27, with a commemorative service in the church followed by a bring and share lunch in the church grounds.
