A sheep fertility testing programme in Tavistock to support farmers amid the bluetongue epidemic has been hailed a success by Dartmoor livestock owners.

More than 170 rams were tested for fertility free of charge for 32 farmers at the Tavistock Livestock Centre on Monday, October 5.

The event organised by the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project (DHFP) was delivered in collaboration with four local veterinary practices: Selworthy Vets (Ivybridge), North Park Veterinary Group (Okehampton, North Tawton, and Hatherleigh), Castle Veterinary Group (Launceston and Liskeard) and South Moor Vets (Ivybridge and Kingsbridge).

It was made possible by funding from the Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL) programme delivered by Dartmoor National Park Authority, with support from the Royal Countryside Fund emergency funding grant.

David Attwell, land management advisor for DHFP, said: “The immediate impact for our farmers has been significant, but we are also conscious of the hidden costs associated with bluetongue – in particular infertility. Ram testing was a practical way to support businesses and provide clarity on the status of a ram, avoiding further financial challenge next spring”.

Sophie Burgess, of the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project, said: "It was a tight turnaround from the initial bluetongue meeting to delivering the fertility testing event, but the determination to support the farming community made it all worthwhile. The response from farmers, veterinary practices and supporting organisations has been overwhelmingly positive, demonstrating the value of bringing practical support directly to the farming community at a critical time."

Experts also offered industry insights, practical advice and the chance to discuss concerns at the event, helping separate fact from fiction as the sheep sector responds to the evolving bluetongue situation.

One farmer said: "The day was extremely well-organised and having access to expert speakers alongside the fertility clinic made it even more valuable. The information shared will help with future planning on our farm and has given us greater confidence going into tupping season."
