Volunteer mountain rescuers were called out by ambulance crews to help an injured walker in a river valley.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock was called yesterday morning (Tuesday, October 20) to a woman who hurt her ankle alongside the River Lyd.

The team deployed an off-road vehicle to transport members, rescue kit and South Western Ambulance Service (SWAST) ambulance personnel to a location above the casualty who was then reached by walking down a steep track.

A rescue team spokesman said: “Ambulance staff assessed the injury as a fracture dislocation of the right ankle and following analgesia, it was splinted.

“Our members then packaged the casualty onto one of our stretchers and carried her up the slope and back to High Down car park (between the Dartmoor Inn and Lydford Farm Shop off the A386) where she was handed over to the ambulance crew for transport to hospital.

“This was a good example of interagency cooperation involving ourselves, SWAST ambulance and SWAST’s hazardous area response team.”
