West Devon Borough Council is supporting the call for a live televised briefing hosted by the Prime Minister and the UK’s chief scientific advisor on the climate change emergency.

The council is backing the call from the National Emergency Briefing (NEB) for such an event; the NEB is the result of leading experts and concerned citizens joining forces to encourage UK decision-makers to step up their response to the escalating climate and nature crisis, starting with a prime-time televised emergency briefing to the nation.

Cllr George Dexter, West Devon Hub Member for Climate and Biodiversity, said: “Climate change and nature loss are among the biggest challenges facing our communities, and it is important that people have access to clear, accessible information about what is happening and why it matters.

“By supporting the call for a televised emergency briefing, we are backing an opportunity to raise public awareness and encourage informed discussion about the action needed at a local, national and global level.”

The Leader of the Council, Cllr Mandy Ewings, has agreed to write to the MPs Sir Mel Stride, Sir Geoffrey Cox and Rebecca Smith, calling upon them to support a national briefing on climate change.

The council is also making its venues available for community screenings of, and discussions around, the People’s Emergency Briefing.
