THERE’S no finer tradition than a lazy Sunday afternoon tea — especially if it happens to be a deliciously Devonshire version. With chilly evenings drawing in, the Horn of Plenty at Gulworthy is the perfect place to unwind and let absolutely everything stop for tea, any day of the week.

Local tradition holds that Tavistock is where the cream tea first began, with the Horn of Plenty’s two-AA-Rosette kitchen behind a contemporary savoury twist on the traditional, as well as typical afternoon tea fare.

If you thought the cream-or-jam first question was the ultimate cream tea conundrum; the Horn of Plenty has upped the ante. This year, the Gulworthy hotel and restaurant overlooking the beautiful Tamar Valley has launched its very own Savoury Afternoon Tea menu – and it’s been going down a treat.

A Devonshire Afternoon Tea

Perfect whether you’re keen to try something different, or don’t have a sweet tooth, the Horn of Plenty’s Savoury Afternoon Tea menu features crumpets and cheesy scones, a tempting terrine and tartlets with bacon and leek, along with mouth-watering arancini –  stuffed croquettes of rice, cooked Italian style. All rounded off with chocolate and apple mousse, with coffee or tea.

Afternoon tea is served between 2pm and 5pm every day, with menus created to ensure that everyone feels indulged and content. From a traditional Devon cream tea with clotted cream to a luxury afternoon tea accompanied by a glass of sparkling Prosecco and a spread of dainty sandwiches, scones, cakes and macaroons, head chef Ashley Wright has also created menus to ensure that vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free guests enjoy the ultimate afternoon tea experience at the Horn of Plenty.

A traditional afternoon tea is the perfect treat for two, or a lovely way to round off an autumn walk in the Tamar Valley. If you’re organising afternoon tea for a group of 10 or more, tea is on the house for the party member who makes the booking. Call 01822 832528 or email: [email protected] to book.
