THROUGHOUT March and April, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has been running ‘Have a Go’ events for everyone interested in being an on-call firefighter — and interested people in the Okehampton area are invited to one this weekend.

These events give a real overview of the role, including information on what your time commitment would be, as well as the strength and fitness expectations required.

The ‘Have a Go’ event for Central North — covering recruiting stations which include Okehampton and North Tawton — will take place at Hatherleigh Fire Station on Saturday, April 27 from 9.30am to 1pm. There is also an event for Central East — covering recruiting stations which include Chagford and Moretonhampstead — at Exmouth Fire Station on Sunday, April 28 from 9.30am to 1pm.

Recruitment and retention officer Caroline Anderson said: ‘Being an on-call firefighter is a big commitment but being in a team of like-minded people, learning life skills you never expected to, is both rewarding and fun.

‘Why wouldn’t you want to help your community? It’s probably the best job in the world!’

Anyone interested in finding out more about these on-call opportunities to work with a team of real professionals should email an expression of interest to attend to [email protected]

Names will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

The opportunity is open to everyone over the age of 18 who wants to do something new and challenging.
