A GROUP of Okehampton residents are asking the community to make ’green hearts’ to send to MP Mel Stride to demand greater governmental action in the fight against climate change.

Okehampton’s very own eco-warrior and member of the newly formed SAS Plastic Free Community group Fran Rickwood has helped to organise the mission and arranged for the green hearts to be made out of felted wool from a local Llanwenog sheep herd in South Tawton to create unique and artistic hearts for the campaign.

She said: "Members of our steering group will be sending their felted green hearts to Mr Stride asking him to support our work in decreasing the amount of single-use plastic in our town."

Felter Ginny Shipway and her colleagues have agreed to make the felted hearts that members of the Okehampton can send to Mel Stride to encourage him to urge the Prime Minister to do more to tackle the climate crisis.

Ginny said: ’I love felting especially when I can source fleeces locally! And so when I was asked by Fran to help create some green hearts, felting was the obvious choice! Myself and some fellow felting enthusiasts are going to spend an afternoon creating felted hearts embellished with a simple moorland scene.

’Our hope is that they will stand out when they land on Mr Stride’s desk and this will elicit a response to the environmental messages on the green heart postcards."

The ’Show the Love’ campaign was set up by the Climate Coalition in 2015 to encourage people from across the UK to use the power of green hearts every February to ask politicians to tackle the climate crisis .
