Hundreds of people are expected to line the streets for this year’s Tavistock Remembrance street parade and moving service.

The event, on Remembrance Sunday, November 8, will culminate in an 11am service at the war memorial. Here the street parade will line up and parade and civic representatives lay wreaths and other symbols of tribute to those serve and who have sacrificed their lives in all conflicts and acts of terrorism to defend our freedoms.

The parade through the town centre will comprise military and other uniformed organisations, including youth groups such as Scouts and Guides and emergency services.

The event is organised (with Tavistock Town Council and Tavistock Lions) by the town branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL).

Chris Smerdon, RBL branch chairman, is keen to stress the branch is still fully active, even though it’s offices are for sale and has announced the launch of the RBL Poppy Appeal: He said: “As many people of Tavistock have noticed, the legion building in King Street is now up for sale. Despite the best efforts of all, RBL HQ have decided that it is not a viable commercial property for its purposes.

“Please do not think that the Tavistock Branch has gone; we are still very much alive and active. To that end, we pre-ordered and have all the wreaths and poppies for the Poppy Appeal and will be distributing them soon.

“We continue to use the building so please feel free to drop in a note if you require anything. However, the price of the wreaths has increased (the first time in over 15 years) as we attract VAT.”

He is encouraging RBL members to attend the Tavistock AGM: “Our AGM will be held in the function room of the Union Inn (many thanks to them) at 11.30am on Saturday, October 3. All members of the Tavistock Branch are heartily encouraged to attend.”
